Unwinding can be difficult for some. When there are things to get done, the thought of indulging in some self-relaxation can add stress, not peace. If you relate, let us teach you the art of unwinding. 

Unwinding does not have to take up a lot of time, even for those who find it difficult to achieve stillness and peace: physically, mentally, or emotionally. Additionally, there is no right way to unwind. Relaxation looks different for every person. Explore some soothing suggestions and find what works best for you. 

  1. Make a drink.

Any kind of drink will do. A tea, a water, a glass of wine, or a cocktail. It is more about the making of the beverage than the beverage itself. Focus on making the beverage, performing each step in the process with full attention and intention. If it is hard to focus solely on the process, put on a playlist or podcast to help your mind grow quiet. Then sit and sip while allowing your mind and body to settle into restfulness slowly.

  1. Take a moment to pray or meditate

This one can be hard, especially if your brain is constantly running or you feel the need to be moving. Find a place where you can be undistracted and comfortable for a few minutes. Close your eyes and focus on slow, deep breathing. When you are ready, pray or meditate for as long as you need. Before resuming daily life, take a few extra deep breaths and imagine peace washing over you. Then slowly resume your activities, with a newfound calmness. 

  1. Take a bath or shower, or do some skincare

Cleaning one’s body can be extremely therapeutic. Take your time in doing so and romanticize this process. Light a candle, warm your bath towels or robe, have a beverage, and put on a playlist or show. While washing, don’t think of it as a task, but as caring for yourself as you would a loved one. Do each step with intention and love, pouring into yourself to allow your body and mind to soothe. 

While these are only a few suggestions, it is easy to get the idea of how to shift your mindset and practices into a calmer and softer version that will give you peace and assist in relinquishing any extra stress.
